On October 25, 2015 the lawyers of Tosson & Awad, LLP had the pleasure of conducting a legal seminar to the local Arabic speaking community in Ridgewood, Queens.
The lawyers found that the main area of interest to the community was immigration law. In particular, one of the important topics of conversation was with respect to wait times of pending asylum applications.
Right now USCIS is backlogged due to the high volume of asylum applicants from Middle Eastern countries, so interview wait times have been taking longer than anticipated. Additionally, it has been noted that asylum interview wait times vary depending on which state the applicant filed from. For example, an applicant who filed their application in February, 2014 can expect to have their interview in September, 2015. Due to the high volume of applicants from New York, the wait time can take longer than some of the other states, though certainly not all.
See current wait times for New York below or visit the USCIS website to see the Affirmative Asylum Scheduling Bulletin.
